Meta Admits Its Glasses Buyers Are Destroying the Recording Light to Film Strangers

Meta built its glasses to disable the camera when the recording LED is covered, then admitted in its own blog that buyers are now modifying and destroying that light so they can film people who never agreed to it.

Meta put a capture light on its AI glasses so the people around you would know when a camera was pointed at them, a small courtesy it now spends engineering hours defending against its own customers. Meta’s own statement says the camera is automatically disabled when it detects the capture LED is blocked, and that since adding the safeguard it has seen people go beyond tape to sophisticated efforts to modify or destroy the capture LED, so it is continuously improving tamper detection. Read that plainly: the real market is the creeps who film people without consent, there is no other mass market for these things, whole communities of these guys exist, and Meta is now in an arms race with its actual paying customers. A company that knows exactly who is buying its product keeps shipping it anyway. Meta’s blog post on AI glasses privacy
