A Michigan Town of 20,000 Is Fighting $1.2 Billion AI Data Center for Nuclear Weapons Scientists

Ypsilanti Township blocked water to a $1.2 billion University of Michigan and Los Alamos AI data center for nuclear weapons simulations, and the university threatened to sue, calling the cutoff unlawful discrimination.

"We do not love nor do we appreciate what the board or regents is doing to our community."

404 Media (Matthew Gault)

America’s nuclear weapons scientists at Los Alamos and the University of Michigan want a $1.2 billion AI data center in Ypsilanti Township to run bomb simulations, and the township board voted on June 16 to fight it to its last breath. The board already passed a 365 day moratorium on piping water to the project so it could study the effect on the local supply, and the university answered by threatening to sue, arguing that withholding water from a nuclear weapons computer counts as unlawful discrimination. A grinning Governor Gretchen Whitmer was projected on the wall behind the board the whole meeting, photographed at a nearby Stargate groundbreaking telling an Oracle billionaire that Michigan is used to people saying no and doing it anyway. The town of 20,000 read passages from Hiroshima into the record and dared the regents to build the thing in Ann Arbor instead. 404 Media on the township fight
