Spotify Fed Fans a Fake Sex Story About Lorde's Song and Gave Her No Way to Turn It Off

Spotify built an AI gadget to tell you what your favorite song means, and its first move on Lorde was to fabricate a scene where she strips to her underwear while a dancer pours water on her, then bolt the fiction onto the wrong track. The About the Song text claimed she turned ‘Current Affairs’ into a full-on performance piece with the water and the stripping, when the performance actually belonged to a different song, ‘GRWM,’ and Spotify confirmed the disputed portion has since been removed. Lorde wrote that the summary was inaccurate and that reducing a song to an AI-generated meaning right at the source limits free interpretation, and asked Spotify to at least make it possible for artists to opt out. Spotify introduced the beta feature in February to summarize the meaning and background of songs using third-party sources.
