Lawyers Filed a Brief Full of Cases AI Invented, and the Judge Torched Them

A judge bounced four lawyers and barred two after AI stuffed their briefs with cases that never existed.

"blindly relying on technology"

Mississippi Free Press, Grace Marion

Four lawyers fighting over a contract with the city of Aberdeen let generative AI draft their briefs, and the filings came back packed with court rulings that never existed. On June 8 a federal judge in the Northern District of Mississippi bounced every one of them from the case and barred two from her court for two years, after one attorney testified she had not realized AI could invent sources. Who could possibly have predicted. Judge Sharion Aycock had a tidy name for the habit, citing the lawyers for “blindly relying on technology,” and the tool sold to save them time keeps torching their licenses instead. Read the Mississippi Free Press on the sanctions.
