Amazon MGM had a nearly finished Andrew Garfield movie about Sam Altman getting fired and rehired at OpenAI, test screenings went warm, and then the studio quietly killed it. The move came only a couple of months after Amazon said it would invest $50 billion in OpenAI as part of a multi-year strategic partnership. One buyer who saw the film described it by saying, “It’s grim, it’s dark, it goes there, and it makes you feel bad after watching it about the future of the human race.” Netflix, Focus, and A24 all passed on the toxic asset before Neon acquired Guadagnino’s film after Amazon MGM dropped it, confirming the purchase.
